“We are global citizens with tribal souls” – Piet Hein, Danish Poet.
Dr. Gaudelli's in his domains on global citizenship identifies five categories as potential pathways for instruction and assessment of global education. These are: Personal Domain-Who?; Issues Domain-What?; Locational Domain (Where?); Temporal Domain (When); Action Domain (Now What?).
With this quote as premise, and using these Gaudelli’s 5 Domains on Global Education as framework, students will develop global competency as they explore Natural Systems. These fit very well with the age group we work with. They are investigating their identity and place in the world at this stage. They also fit into our discussion of time and space as well as size and scale, systems, dynamics and structure of materials in our science classes. That who we are, finds location in where we are and when we were there provides opportunities for a deep exploration and inquiry that propel us to act. Our multidimensional identity makes it possible for us to exist in all places simultaneously and according to Dr.Gaudelli, is directly related to how we face and solve problems. The Here/There dynamic makes our identity and existence as fluid as ever. His use of visible and invisible boundaries reminds me of the cultural icebergs and places an enormous responsibility on educators. His Then/Now/Later Dynamic makes it imperative that what we teach students and what they learn and do have global impact. According to him, this is where we teach students that they have agency and what they do have an impact on the globe. The different ways we think of time and the human effect on location such as the Earth evoke systemic, global thinking and acting.
